MINI GUIDE: WHAT TO VISIT IN BARI
Bari, the pearl of the south overlooking the Adriatic Sea and an ancient port city that stretches over 42 km of coastline. Based on the findings from archaeological excavations near the church of San Pietro, in the Bari Vecchia area, most scholars trace the origins of the city back to the Bronze Age, attributed to the Paucezi people, while others hypothesize that Bari (Barion in Greek and later Barium in Latin) was colonized by the Cretans.
Bari shows, in its architecture and folklore, the deep marks of its long history and offers visitors all its rich artistic, cultural, and gastronomic heritage.
The visit to the city begins from the seafront, stretching over the crystalline waters of Puglia, then turns towards the ancient heart of the city: Bari Vecchia. Here we find the Basilica of San Nicola, where the relics of the saint are kept. Built in 1089 to house the remains of Saint Nicholas, it is one of the few places in our country where both Catholic and Orthodox rites are celebrated. Leaving the basilica, you enter the alleys of Bari Vecchia, which houses the medieval part of the city, dominated by the Norman-Swabian Castle.
Also in this area are two of the main buildings of the city: the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Fortino of Sant'Antonio Abbate, built in the 14th century to defend the city.
Bari jealously guards its beauties even away from the sunlight, so to fully experience them, we recommend a complete tour of its underground, which will allow you to traverse all the evolutionary phases of the urban layout, starting from the Bronze Age, passing through the Roman era, and finally reaching the peak of splendor, the period when the city became the capital of the Western Byzantine Empire.
For those who want to explore the surroundings, there is plenty of choice: Polignano a Mare, the Trulli of Alberobello, the Castellana Caves, Trani, and the Mercadante Forest are just some of the places you can visit near Bari.
Naturally, a visit to Bari cannot be considered complete without tasting the local delicacies. Among the must-try dishes are orecchiette with turnip tops, the unmissable rice, potatoes, and mussels, and all the delicious dishes made with fresh raw fish. But Bari is also renowned for its street food, so you cannot miss tasting the classic focaccia with cherry tomatoes, panzerotti, and sgagliozze, irresistible fried slices of polenta.
