What to see in Piedmont
Piedmont is a region rich in culture and works of art, including royal palaces, castles, shrines and many other elegant and sought-after monuments. Piedmont is full of exquisite and regal cities, mountainous and hilly landscapes of superb beauty, and is the place from which fine and world-recognized wines come. Here you can enjoy quality vacations and unforgettable experiences.
Why visit Piedmont?
Piedmont is world famous for fine wine: the wine-growing hills between the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero are internationally renowned. These areas are rich in wine shops and restaurants, and stopping here is truly a must for any traveler. Piedmont's landscape, from the Po Valley to the peaks of Monviso and Monte Rosa, is varied and spectacular, and there are a number of points of interest including abbeys, fortresses, charming towns and villages. Piedmont is a region of Italy that, while renowned and well-known, has hidden beauties that many tourists overlook but that a discerning traveler can appreciate and recognize. So here is a tour of must-see places in Piedmont.
Cuneo
Between the Langhe and Roero hills of Piedmont, there appears Cuneo, a food and wine destination of excellence. The atmosphere in Cuneo is very special: here you eat really well and drink even better, the mountain air is fresh and rejuvenating, and the city engages all the senses. The surroundings of Cuneo are the perfect starting point for trekking. In town you can visit Piazza Galimberti, surrounded by really beautiful 19th-century buildings. You can continue to Via Roma and see the Palazzo Civico and the Palazzo della Torre, and don't miss a visit to the Mondovi district.
Alba Piedmont
Still immersed in the Langhe, an area of boundless vineyards built on rolling hills and between the provinces of Cuneo and Asti, is Alba Piemonte, a little gem in the province of Cuneo. Just to the right of the Tanaro River, Alba Piemonte is a simple little town that is well worth discovering: the Cathedral of San Lorenzo is a Gothic-style building constructed of red bricks inside which you will see interesting shades of color. Also don't miss a visit to the Church of the Magdalene commissioned by Carlo Giacinto della Rovere in the second half of the 18th century and whose wooden portal is a true masterpiece of Piedmontese Baroque.
Asti
Another jewel of Piedmont is definitely the city of Asti: this town is so much like a village, and of the village it conveys the emotions. Asti is the food and wine queen of Piedmont; Barbera sparkling wine comes from here. Visiting Asti is a good opportunity to taste truly exquisite wines. In Asti you can also watch the Palio in Piazza Campo, see the Clock Tower, immerse yourself in history at the Museo del Risorgimento, and take a tour of Monferrato.
Alessandria
Alessandria and its province represent a special destination perfect for atypical travelers who like to explore quaint locations and who like to delve into the mysteries and secrets of the most distinctive, elegant and refined cities. The city of Alessandria owes its name to Pope Alexander III: here you can see aristocratic mansions and the military fortress built to repel the attacks of Frederick Barbarossa. The Savoy family then built fortifications in Alessandria, creating a city that became the setting for some of the major events of the Risorgimento. Alessandria is particularly famous for the Borsalino Hat and there is still the building where the manufacture of the famous hat used by Hollywood stars took place.
Turin
A visit to Piedmont cannot be separated from a tour of the beautiful city of Turin: one of the Italian cities with the most ferment, vitality and innovation, Turin is also a city full of mysteries and surprises. Turin's squares are large and the buildings regal. Here you can visit the Egyptian Museum, see the Mole Antonelliana and taste many food and wine delicacies. From here you can set off for a visit to the Basilica of Superga, built in the Baroque style by architect Filippo Juvarra, or the Reggia della Venaria Reale and stroll through the Valentino Park and the medieval Borgo, built here for the 1884 Italian World's Fair.
The city of Turin has been fundamental to Italian history, and the city's buildings are a legacy of its importance. Here you can visit the many Covered Galleries: the Subalpina, Galleria Umberto I, and Galleria San Federico.
The Susa Valley
The Susa Valley is a place steeped in mysteries, legends and much folklore. An alpine corridor perfect for out-of-town trips where you can admire beautiful lakes, such as Lago Grande and Lago Piccolo, and medieval towns like Avigliana. The Susa Valley is the perfect place to ski: more than 500 km of slopes and breathtaking slopes await you.
Borromean Islands and Lake Maggiore
Another natural spectacle offered by Piedmont is undoubtedly the Borromean Islands, three picturesque islands that every visitor to Lake Maggiore cannot miss. This archipelago contains unique beauties, and each island differs from the other in special features: Isola Madre is the largest and most distant from the mainland, Isola Bella is the most characteristic while Isola dei Pescatori is the smallest and most modest, with a village that is a must-see.
