Traveling in Bari

Bari, the pearl of the south facing the Adriatic Sea and an ancient port city that stretches over 42 km of coastline. Based on the findings emerged during the archaeological excavations near the church of San Pietro, Bari Vecchia area, most scholars place the origins of the city back to the Bronze Age, by the people of Paucezi, while others hypothesize that Bari (Barion in Greek and later Barium in Latin) was colonized by the Cretans. Bari shows, in its architecture and folklore, the deep signs of its long history and offers visitors all its rich artistic, cultural and enogastronomic heritage. The visit of the city starts from the seafront, stretched on the crystalline waters of Puglia, and then turns towards the ancient heart of the city: Bari Vecchia. Here we find the Basilica of San Nicola, where the relics of the saint are preserved. Built in 1089 to host the remains of San Nicola, it is one of the few places in our country where both Catholic and Orthodox rites are celebrated. Leaving the basilica, we enter the alleys of Bari Vecchia, which encloses the medieval part of the city, dominated by the Norman-Swabian Castle. Also in this area there are two other of the main buildings of the city: the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Fortino of Sant'Antonio Abbate, built in the 14th century to defend the city. Bari jealously guards its beauties even away from the light of the sun, so to fully experience them we recommend a complete tour of its underground, which will allow you to traverse all the evolutionary phases of the urban layout, starting from the Bronze Age, passing through the Roman era and finally arriving at the time of maximum splendor, when the city became the capital of the Byzantine Empire of the West. For those who want to explore the surroundings, there is plenty of choice: Polignano a Mare, the Trulli of Alberobello, the Caves of Castellana, Trani and the Mercadante Forest are just some of the places to visit near Bari. Naturally, a visit to Bari cannot be considered complete if it is not crowned by a tasting of the typical local delicacies. Among the indispensable dishes we find the orecchiette with rapa, the inevitable rice, potatoes and mussels and all the tasty dishes based on fresh raw fish. But Bari also enjoys considerable fame for its street food, so you cannot exempt yourself from tasting the classic focaccia with cherry tomatoes, the panzerotti and the sgagliozze, irresistible slices of fried polenta. What are you waiting for? Get on board and prepare for your journey to discover Bari. Italo allows you to reach Bari with High Speed thanks to the new direct route Turin-Bari. We offer connections from Foggia, Barletta, Caserta, Benevento, Rome, Florence, Bologna, Milan, Reggio Emilia and Turin. Discover all the Italo offers and buy your ticket.

Traveling in Brescia

Are you looking for a train journey to discover Lombardy and the Po Valley? With Italo you can easily reach Brescia, one of the most important cities that unites the old and the new like few others. Brescia will surprise you with the sweet union between the old city with its traditions, and the new city, engine of the Po Valley. A proud city of its origins: it is no coincidence that it is nicknamed Lioness of Italy, a name that dates back to the ten days of resistance to the Austrian invasion during the Italian Risorgimento. Its sites of historical importance have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, such as the monumental area of the Roman forum and the city museum, inserted in the Lombard monastic complex of San Salvatore-Santa Giulia. Brescia is the ideal city for a visit on foot, take the four main squares of its historic center as a reference: Piazza del Mercato, Piazza della Vittoria, Piazza della Loggia and Piazza Paolo VI. In the latter you will have the opportunity to visit two cathedrals: the Duomo Vecchio, also called the Cathedral of the Rotunda, and the Duomo Nuovo. Eating in Brescia will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting parts of your trip: don't miss a taste of the typical dishes of the area, including polenta, the queen of Lombard cuisine, which cannot be renounced. You will find a suitable version for all tastes: with cod, with mushrooms, with vegetables or, if you are a meat lover, with pork sauce. The numerous square meters of public greenery that dot the city will also allow you to spend relaxing afternoons outdoors during the summer: the largest is the Parco delle Colline, but neither do the Parco Tarello or the Parco del Castello, which offer a view of fascinating glimpses of the historic centre. For a day of shopping in Brescia, on the other hand, we recommend the itinerary that starts from Corso Magenta, passes through Corso Cavour and continues along Corso Zanardelli and its numerous shops under the arcades. A few minutes' walk from Piazza della Vittoria you will find Corso Garibaldi and the ancient Torre della Pallata, for shopping with a boho-chic atmosphere and an international touch, given the numerous ethnic clubs that populate it. Brescia is also characterized by its proximity to the largest Italian lake, Lake Garda. A destination not to be missed for those wishing to spend a weekend in the midst of nature, strolling along the numerous panoramic itineraries. You will be able to fully enjoy the lake experience while also pampering your palate with dishes that only fresh water can offer: eels, tench and carp are the basis of many local dishes.
